When Googler Thomas Wagner’s son Max was diagnosed with Alexander disease, a rare and fatal neurological disorder, he turned to Gemini to help him understand the complex science behind it. By making dense medical research accessible, Gemini helped Thomas connect ideas across research fields and identify work that could potentially be applied to Alexander disease.

Armed with that understanding, Thomas used Gemini to reach out to scientists who had never encountered the disease before, ultimately helping inspire 11 research groups to begin exploring it, bringing Max closer to a cure and securing additional funding for a disease that was previously going largely unresearched due to its “ultra-rare” status.

We told Thomas and Max’s story to show a side of AI that goes beyond everyday utility: its potential to make knowledge more accessible, connect people and ideas, and help unlock possibilities that previously felt out of reach.
